A study published in Psychological Science has revealed that the post-sex glow can have positive effects for up to 48 hours after intimacy, helping to strengthen bonds in couples who have frequent sex.
Sex = Happiness
The lead author of the study, psychologist Andrea Meltzer, stated:
“Our research shows that couples who maintain high levels of sexual satisfaction for 48 hours after intimacy tend to be happier in their relationships even several months later.”
A study based on 200 newlyweds
To reach their conclusions, Meltzer and her team analyzed data gathered from two separate studies involving more than 200 newlywed couples.
Before going to sleep, participants were asked to log whether or not they had engaged in sexual intercourse. Regardless of their answer, they also had to evaluate how they felt about their sex life, their partner, and their marriage at that exact moment.
Closer couples and fewer conflicts
Using this data, the researchers discovered that whenever couples had sex, both partners felt significantly happier over the following two days.
Another interesting takeaway was that demographic factors like age and gender did not make a difference.
According to the study, couples who reported high levels of satisfaction and happiness also stated they were generally more content with their marriage. Furthermore, these couples experienced fewer conflicts when welcoming a newborn into their lives, for instance.
While this doesn't guarantee a happily-ever-after, this boost in happiness and satisfaction didn't fade nearly as quickly for them as it did for couples who had sex less regularly.
Sexuality plays a major role in relationships
“This study is important because it adds to a growing body of research suggesting that sex plays a major role in maintaining a healthy relationship,” Meltzer added.
This work also aligns with another study conducted by a team of researchers, which concluded that happy couples prioritize cuddling over orgasms, unlike those who have sex less frequently.
